What Is a Load Test?

A Load Test is a test performed on equipment or structures by applying a specified test load or force to evaluate their load-bearing capacity and verify that no abnormal damage, deformation, or structural failure occurs after the load is applied.

Equipment commonly subjected to Load Testing includes Chain Hoists, Electric Hoists, Lifting Beams, Spreader Beams, Spreader Bars, Lifting Baskets, Trolleys, and other custom-fabricated lifting devices designed for specific lifting applications.

What Should Be Inspected Before a Load Test?

Before performing a Load Test, a preliminary inspection should be carried out to verify the condition of the equipment, includinsg the main structure, welds, lifting points, hooks, shackles, and other related components. If any damage, defect, or abnormal condition is identified, it should be repaired or corrected before the test begins.

For certain applications, Visual Inspection (VT) may also be combined with Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods such as Penetrant Testing (PT) or Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) to detect surface discontinuities, particularly around welded areas and other critical points of the lifting equipment.

Why Is Load Testing Important?

Load Testing helps confirm that lifting equipment is suitable for its rated capacity, identify defects before use, and reduce the risk of equipment failure during lifting operations.

The test load and method should be selected based on the equipment type, design, applicable standards, and manufacturer’s requirements. The same test percentage should not be applied to all lifting equipment.
